Three moves that limit the damage
What you do in the first five minutes matters more than anything we do in the first hour. Do these while the phone is still ringing.
Water is coming in
Stop it at the valve
Under sinks and behind toilets there's an oval shut-off valve — turn it clockwise until snug. Still flowing? Close the main, usually at the water heater or the front hose bib.

Flip the breaker — and leave it off
Switch the circuit fully off at the panel and don't touch the outlet. A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something — don't reset it a third time.

Clear the area, don't clean it
Keep people and pets away and leave the debris where it fell — we photograph everything before securing the opening, and your insurer will want those photos.
